In celebration of the Wu Tang Clan’s 20th anniversary, photographer Henry Hargreaves and cake artist Amirah Kassem have collaborated on a very sweet Wu Tang-inspired exhibition called “‘C.R.E.A.M’ Cake Rules Everything Around Me.” The exhibition, opening tonight at Wallplay in NYC’s Lower East Side, will run through December 9th.
Kassem created five pieces made out of cake for the exhibition, which were then photographed by Hargreaves. “Each piece was inspired by things that represent Wu Tang to me—things like Chinese takeout, karate, song lyrics (“ice cream”), the iconic logo, chess, and other Wu Tang-related things, like the Killa Beez. It’s a huge honor for me to be a part of this event since I am such a big fan of Hip Hop and the Wu Tang Clan.” Why cake, you ask. “I am a baker so cake is my canvas and frosting is my medium,” says Amirah, who owns New York-based custom cake company Flour Shop.
“‘C.R.E.A.M’ Cake Rules Everything Around Me” is part of the larger “WU HA,” a year-long initiative that celebrates the 20th anniversary of the seminal hip-hop collective.
Ask not why this Wu Tang cake art exists, just appreciate its greatness.
