In an epic win for late-night snackers, it turns out that eating before bed can actually be good for you. The right pre-slumber snack can help you sleep better by keeping your blood sugar levels stable, reports TIME.

According to clinical dietician Stephanie Maxson, low blood sugar can wake you up in the middle of the night and cause you to feel sluggish in the morning. Plus, having some food in your belly while you sleep will stop you from releasing the hunger hormones that tell your body to store fat, says dietician Cassie Bjork. So basically, if you don’t eat between dinner and breakfast, you’re more likely to be fat and tired. Thank you, science.

While dietitians will endorse late night snacking, they won’t go as far as to sanction that Reese’s cup. Processed and sugary foods will cause a blood sugar spike followed by a crash; instead, try foods that take longer to digest, like whole grains, vegetables, and fruit.

Fats are okay too, especially if you often wake up hungry or tired, since they slow down the rate at which you absorb carbohydrates. And if you’ve been working out, protein will help your muscles repair themselves while you snooze.

Good snacks that will help you sleep better include veggies and guac, lightly buttered popcorn, fruit and yogurt, and peanut butter on whole wheat bread. And according to a 2005 study by the British Cheese Board, fromage can help you nod off too—plus it can make your dreams way more fun.

The study found that contrary to popular belief, cheese doesn’t give you nightmares, but different kinds of cheese can give you different kinds of dreams. Blue Stilton made for wackier dreams, Red Leicester caused nostalgic ones, Lancashire was tied to work, cheddar brought up celebrities, and Cheshire caused no dreams at all.

Tonight’s experiment: Whole wheat cheddar grilled cheese while watching a Ryan Gosling movie.
