We like spending our nights in white-hot, two-hour-wait restaurants and bars as much as the next New Yorker, but we also appreciate the less hyped places that serve great food without all the fanfare. Ironically, no one knows those spots as well as the chefs at the restaurants that do have two hour waits—after a shift, the last thing they want to do is dive right back into another scene.

We asked 10 New York chefs—and a bartender—what their local, unsung culinary (and drink) heroes are, where you may find them hanging out when they’re off duty. Here’s what they had to say.
