On one level, it makes perfect sense that Modernist Cuisine would pay homage to Catalan Modernist visionary architect Antoni Gaudí. Still, this gingerbread version of Casa Batlló in Barcelona takes mind-boggling levels of intricacy in gingerbread house design to a level currently only occupied by this sculpture.

Modernist Cuisine’s blog entry about constructing this gingerbread house confirms that it follows classic gingerbread house rules: Everything involved in construction is completely edible.

Here are some construction details:

  • Stained-glass windows were made by crushing Jolly Ranchers with a meat cleaver, then carefully placing the shards of the broken candies in their respective windows. The gingerbread was then baked on a baking steel topped with a Silpat in MC’s bread oven. As the blog explains, “the radiant heat from the top of the oven melts the Jolly Ranchers without burning the bottom of the gingerbread.” Of course.
  • The tiles were also made from Jolly Ranchers.
  • The snowflakes were made from rice paper.
  • Snow powder was made from tapioca maltodextrin.
  • Other details include: prismatic scaled shingles of icing, edible gold luster dust.

We think it’s difficult not to be inspired by the beautiful design of Casa Batlló, especially when the owners of the actual architectural masterwork create promotional videos like this:
