Caffeinated gum, that is. A study by Kent State University indicates shows that trained bike riders who chewed caffeinated gum before they went on cycling tests saw a two-minute improvement, in comparison to those given placebos.
The research found that the key is to chew the caffeinated gum five minutes before the race; chewing the gum 1-2 hours beforehand did not produce any signs of enhancement.
It isn’t just the caffeine that gives you a physical boost. The act of chewing alone stimulate awareness, said St. Lawrence University last year. Popeye was on to something with his spinach after all.
The St. Lawrence study didn’t indicate whether caffeinated gum was used, but it did find the same time frame—chewing gum five minutes before—for efficacy.
