When it comes to the art of the slice, Brooklyn is America’s undisputed pizza mecca. For more than a century, New Yorkers have been melding gooey cheese, red sauce, and dough in Kings County, and their reputation for pizza mastery is well-deserved.

Though Sean Evans is a fierce defender of the controversial deep-dish pie, the Chicago native agreed to tour some of BK’s most revered pizza joints to see what all the hype was about. In the hopes of gently shifting Sean’s allegiances, First We Feast enlisted the help of Paulie Gee: the owner of the eponymous Paulie Gee’s pizzeria in Greenpoint, and one of the area’s most devout pizza historians.

Together, Sean and Paulie scarf down countless slices of ‘za at Nino's Pizza in Bay Ridge and Sam’s Pizza in Cobble Hill. Finally, Sean concludes his pizza pilgrimage in Greenpoint, where Paulie cooks up his signature “Hellboy”—a Neapolitan-style pie with soppressata piccante and Mike's Hot Honey.
