“No soup for you!” These words—taken from a 1995 episode of Seinfeld called “The Soup Nazi”—has become one of the most quotable phrases in television, used to establish total dominance over another person and his innermost desires. Now, DeAndre Jordan, the 6’ 11” center for the Los Angeles Clippers, is channeling that iconic Seinfeld character, keeping thousands of Minnesota Timberwolves fans from enjoying some free frozen yogurt—and he's loving it.
On Saturday, as the two teams faced off at Minneapolis’ Target Center, the Timberwolves were running a promotion where every fan in attendance would be given free frozen yogurt if a member of the opposite team missed two consecutive free throws. As SBNation notes, Jordan isn’t known for his steady hand from behind the stripe, averaging .422 for his career. Still, over the weekend the center rose to the occasion, sinking 10 of 16 shots.
After the game, Jordan seemed to revel not only in his team's victory over the Timberwolves, but the joy that comes from denying an entire stadium full of people the pleasure of eating some frozen treats.
A sideline reporter prompted the center to deliver the infamous Soup Nazi line, and Jordan ad libbed a little bit: “No ice cream tonight!”
Eh, close enough.
