Of all the expressions in the English language, the term “shit sandwich” is a phrase best left to hyperbole. Unfortunately for all of humanity, a San Antonio, Texas police officer named Matthew Luckhurst was fired this week after he forced an unknown homeless man to literally eat a sandwich filled with feces, the San Antonio Express-News reports.
After getting wind of his disgusting abuse of power, Luckhurst’s fellow officers actually reported the cop to internal affairs, sparking a scandal at the San Antonio Police Department, and a private meeting within the city council.
As Deadspin notes, one council member said the act was "reprehensible," while another called the bullying "just horrible." Though the alleged incident took place back in May, Luckhurst was subsequently fired this week, and the offense led to an official statement from San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor.
"Firing this officer was the right thing to do,” Taylor told the San Antonio Express-News. “His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force."
Though police brutality has often captured headlines in 2016—including the killing of numerous unarmed black men and women—rarely has such a disgusting, degrading, and bizarre act been perpetrated by a law enforcement officer. Luckhurst, however, isn’t planning to go quietly, reportedly planning to appeal his indefinite suspension.
“This was a vile and disgusting act that violates our guiding principles of ‘treating all with integrity, compassion, fairness and respect,’” San Antonio police chief William McManus said in a statement. “The action of this one former officer in no way reflects the actions of all the other good men and women who respectfully serve this community.”
