According to Australia Geographic, the bird’s eye chili pepper boasts between 100,000 and 225,000 units on the Scoville scale, and is commonly found throughout regions in Southeast Asia. And while there are certainly hotter peppers in the world (the feared Carolina Reaper clocks in at roughly 2,200,000 SHU), 100 of those fiery bird's eyes are packed into the Indonesian dish Indomie Abang Adek, making it one of the hottest bowls of noodles on the planet.
Now, one brave soul named Ben Ten—a YouTube personality who frequently drinks cobra blood and pork knuckles on his channel Awesome Eats—has decided to take on the Indomie Abang Adek challenge, capturing every painful moment on camera for his viewers.
“Ah, it’s so hot!” Ben’s friend murmurs after they shovel the first clump of noodles into their mouths. “It’s not edible, man. It’s not fricking edible. It’s so hot.”
Even though Ben’s friends keep telling him he doesn't have to finish his bowl, the Awesome Eater soldiers on, getting up from his seat and pacing the restaurant as sweat drips from his forehead.
Ben removes his shirt and begins rubbing ice on his tongue to combat the growing pain—but alas, it's too late. He downs bubble tea after bubble tea and runs his head under cold water, but nothing seems to help. Eventually, Ben’s hearing starts to go as his body adjusts to the extreme heat he's ingested.
“I can’t he anything, man. I’m fucking deaf!” he says. "Oh, dude, this sucks. This is the shittiest feeling in the world, man."
Allow Ben’s experience to serve as a cautionary tale. If you ever find yourself in Indonesia—and the sight of some simple Tapatío is enough to make you queasy—make sure you avoid Indomie Abang Adek at all costs.
