Pope Francis is a pretty cool dude. Since being elected the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013, Pope Frank has adopted more liberal views on abortion, gay marriage, and contraception than his predecessors, and solidified his legacy as a champion of the world’s sick and poor. Last year, he even dropped a pretty fire mixtape called "Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!”
Like all cool dudes living in Rome, Pope Francis is also a big fan of ‘za, and lately he’s been hooking the city’s homeless population up with beach trips and pizza parties.
As Papal Almoner, it’s Arbishop Konrad Krajewski’s job to raise money and fund charity projects on behalf of Pope Frank. According to Vatican Insider, this summer Krajewski has been driving nearly a dozen poor Romans to a beach 20 minutes outside of the city, where the men can sunbathe and swim using towels and trunks provided by the Vatican.
"We certainly are not saving the world with some of these initiatives, we are not solving the problems of the homeless in Rome, but at least we are restoring to them a little dignity," Krajewski said. “We always conclude the trip in a pizzeria, as do many people who are on vacation at this time.”
So far, over 100 people have taken part in the program. And though the majority of the participants are homeless people who frequent the area surrounding the Vatican, they hail originally from all over the world.
"Yesterday there were two Albanians, an Afghan, a Ukrainian, a Georgian, an Indian and three Italians, and during the journey we sang, listening to the radio,” Krajewski said. “For these, our brothers in need who are used to living in insecurity, these are moments that remain in their memory, they have the chance to feel like everyone else."
