Earlier this week, authorities found 40 dead tiger cubs in a freezer at a Buddhist temple in Thailand. And now, in even more disturbing news, human remains have been discovered in a deep freezer in North Carolina after a woman purchased the ice box for $30 from her neighbor. Local police are reportedly calling the incident the "ultimate cold case."

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, believes the person who sold her the freezer had put her mother’s dead body in the unit. She was told the freezer was a “time capsule” for a Sunday school project, and was instructed not to open it until a church came for the contents inside. When the church never came, the woman opened the freezer and was horrified to find a foot inside.

“My heart was in my throat and I ran outside, called 911,” the woman told CBS North Carolina. “[She was] just the sweetest lady. I mean quiet, kept to herself, stayed at home. Just unbelievable how she could just stick her mom in a freezer.”

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the remains as the neighbor’s mother. Though the death is thought to be from natural causes, the neighbor is wanted for “felony concealing or failing to notify the death of a person,” and is thought to have fled to West Virginia.

“She sold me her frozen mother for $30,” the woman said. “How do you do something like that?”
