Ted Cruz’s romantic life is not something most of us are interested in hearing much about. And if today’s bizarre story from the campaign trail is anything to go by, that’s precisely the right impulse.

In an interview with CNN, Heidi Cruz reminisced about the time Ted casually brought home 100 cans of Campbell’s chunky soup after their honeymoon. How sexy must that trip have been if canned soup was the follow-up gesture?

Here’s what went down, according to Heidi:

“When I married Ted, we got back from our honeymoon, and he went off to the store and came home by himself. And I was completely shocked to see that he arrived back at our apartment with literally 100 cans of Campbell’s Chunky soup. I never bought 100 of anything.

This was shocking to me, so we had a tough conversation about it. I said, ‘You don’t buy 100 of anything, much less canned soup. We can’t do this. I’ll be making things.’ He said, ‘No, I know you. you won’t be making things.'”

We have two questions:

  1. How long until Donald Trump starts hurling soup-eater insults at “Lyin’ Ted”?
  2. Why did Cruz choose to stock up on soup rather than bacon? After all, the guy can cook up some mean bacon with the help of a machine gun.
