Adding sexual innuendo, rap lyrics, or crude humor to a Twitter account is pretty much exactly how corporations get the attention of youth today.

The Hamburger Helper is rapping about water whippin’, and the world is loving it. But for KFC, trying to get a little too edgy with its social-media strategy backfired this week, after a photo of a man with a blurred crotch sitting next to a young woman in a dress with the caption, “Warning: #NSFW something hot and spicy is coming soon,” was removed from its Twitter page.

According to Bro Bible, the photo was posted by KFC Australia as a part of a ‘Hot and Spicy Chicken’ promotion. What the brand didn’t anticipate was how upset Twitter would get at its cheeky hand-job jokes. Pretty much as soon as the tweet was sent, people started teeing off on the Colonel. And to be fair, the blurred image really doesn’t make chicken sound appetizing.

KFC Australia removed the post within an hour and released an apology statement to Australian news site News.Au.Com shortly after: “This was a genuine tweet to launch KFC’s new Hot & Spicy chicken products next week. It was not intended to offend and we’ve removed the image,”.

KFC probably should have done their research and realized that IHOP posted a similarly stupid and offensive tweet a few months ago and got in just as much hot water.

Step your game up, Down Under Colonel!
