There’s about to be a diva showdown, not on stage, but in the aisles of your local grocery store. Patti LaBelle found mega success with her line of sweet potato pies, which flew off the shelves last year with a little bit of help from this epic viral review. Now, Aretha Franklin is gearing up to take on the prepared foods market too. According to MLive, the legendary singer and “The Queen of Soul” is developing a line of foods with a company in Phoenix.
Franklin says that her line will include dishes like chili, gumbo, and baked chicken with dressing. While she didn’t offer many details about the line, Franklin revealed that the chicken “will be in a loaf pan, kind of like those Sara Lee cakes.” The singer also doesn’t appear to be afraid of the competition. When asked by WDIV if she had tried LaBelle’s pies, Franklin replied “No, I haven’t.” She then quickly added, “Ms. Patti’s gonna have to move that pie to the side.”
Aretha Franklin strikes me as a woman who cooks for her family…but it’s not like you’re pushing your cousin to get to her candied yams

Franklin might be confident in her upcoming food line, but it’s going to be hard to beat LaBelle’s success. The $3.50 pies, which are sold at Wal-Mart, became so popular that some people were reselling them on eBay and Craigslist for upwards of $45. The pie also launched a number of memes, and proved to be so popular, the Wal-Mart sold one pie per second for 72 hours straight in November. Should Franklin say a little prayer?
