In a clip from his upcoming cameo on Running Wild with Bear Grylls, President Obama sits down to a fresh salmon lunch with the survival expert.
In a very Rene Redzepi-like move, Grylls takes a pile of moss out of his backpack, and pulls the bloody carcass of a half-eaten salmon from it. Grylls explains that he found the mutilated fish in a riverbank, and a bear likely got to it before he did.
According to Today.com, while filming, The President said, “This has got to be one of the best days of my presidency… First of all, I’m not in the office. Second of all, I’m not in a suit.”
Obama comments that while the salmon is “a nice-lookin’ piece of fish,” he would have preferred if Grylls brought along some crackers to eat with it. (What Obama actually meant to say: “I wish I had some pea-less guacamole to accompany it.”)
Then Obama turns extremely critical of Grylls’ kitchen prowess, saying, “Bear’s a mediocre cook, but the fact that we ate something recognizable is encouraging.”
According to Today, the episode was shot while Obama paid a three-day visit to the 49th state to observe the impact of climate change on the Alaskan wilderness.
Watch the clip above, and then catch Obama and Grylls’ full Alaskan adventure when the episode airs on NBC later this year.
