We’re living in an age of mashup-food mania, a time in which a new frankenfood unveils itself everyday. To help you keep up with all the new hypebeast snacks on the scene, we’ll be doing a weekly roundup of ridiculous mashup foods you need to know about right now, and ranking them on staying power. Read on!

Ramen + Doughnut = Ramnut

The mashup: Our first thought when we saw this was “Doesn’t it exist already?” and the answer is “Why yes, it does;” although this version is arguably truer to the root ingredients than the Japanese savory fried bread we blogged about in September. The recipe was developed and posted online by Culinary Brodown blogger Josh Scherer, and one thing’s for sure: The dude understands food styling.

Staying power: Low. Although these look amazing (like, really surprisingly beautiful), making ramen donuts, or any donuts, is time consuming. While we can see lots of people wanting to try this, we can’t see many of them being bothered to actually do it, which means there’s a great business opportunity here for an enterprising chef. Hot Dog + Fruit Loops = The Happy Dog

The mashup: The Happy Dog in Cleveland is like one of those parents who catches their kid smoking and, instead of grounding them, makes them smoke an entire pack of cigarettes so they feel sick and never want to look at a pack of Camels again. For $5, the bar will let you can have as many toppings as you can fit on your frank; the 50 (that’s right, five-zero) options include Spaghetti-Os, chunky peanut butter, and for some reason, Fruit Loops.

Staying power: High. The menu encourages you to “have fun and be creative,” and having a stupid amount of choices (some more ridiculous than others) is part of the shtick. Even if the Fruit Loops are ordered irregularly and only by drunk people on a dare, it costs next to nothing to keep a box of sugary cereal in the kitchen. Mapo Tofu + Pizza = The Chang

The mashup: While you were watching Masterchef Junior last Tuesday, David Chang (Momofuku), Rene Redzepi (Noma), and Danny Bowien (Mission Chinese) were just messing around inventing mapo tofu pizza, NBD.

Staying power: Medium. We’re daring to hope that the trio were recipe testing for the new menu at Mission Chinese (which is taking over the Rosette space on the Lower East Side) and that this was not, in fact, the single most FOMO-inducing moment of a New York food lover’s life. Please God, no.
