The bustling food scene of Tehran falls under the “local” and “organic” spectrum, without the hideous hipster-related subtext.
Food-wise, the Grand Bazaar is the place to be, and Munchies provides us with a mouthwatering visual tour of the market’s offerings, ranging from kebab to dried fruits.
Delicacies like orange-colored pistachios and dried sour plums abound at the dried fruit stand, which also offers masghati, a solidified pudding covered with rose petals. “It’s basically melted sugar” says Gelareh, Munchies’ reporter in Tehran.
The epicenter of the Grand Bazaar is Moslem restaurant, which serves 4,000 to 5,000 people daily. During peak hours, it takes 30 minutes to get the food. This does not sound like an unbearable waiting time to us Westerners—but actually, Moslem falls under the category of “fast food” in Tehran. Established 13 years ago, Moslem attracts so many crowds because, as owner Moslem Rastgood puts it, “It’s fast food, but good food.” Their signature dish is the tahchin, an Iranian rice cake made from rice, yogurt, saffron, egg, and chicken fillets.
“When a customer tastes it, they can tell it’s good and they will come back for it,” Rastgoo tells Munchies. “The customer has tried it once and will then seek it again.”
