The talented James Chapman makes illustrations of onomatopoeia. In his latest Tumblr post, Chapman illustrates “The Sound of Frying in Other Languages.”

In English, we refer to the (incredibly satisfying) sound of frying as “sizzle.” But in China, people listen to pork “zizi” as it hits the wok, and in Estonia, eggs “tssss.”

Check out other awesome sound comics from Chapman on his Tumblr. The illustrator made the below “International Sounds of Eating and Drinking” comics on commission for Food & Wine

Chapman told F&W that “his favorite discovery was ‘goku goku’ in Japanese.” He says, “It’s so different from sounds I’d normally associate with drinking, but somehow I can relate to it.”slurrrp
