We’ve all read Fast Food Nation and heard about the barbaric conditions of factory farms in America. But sometimes, even if a farm is trying to do things the right way, the threat to the animals can come from outside sources: like a poultry-hating, golf club-wielding maniac.

According to this chilling story in the L.A. Times, at least one burglar broke into the Foster Farms chicken shed in Fresno County, CA on September 20, then proceeded to massacre 920 birds before fleeing the scene. From the Fresno County Sherriff’s Office:

The investigation revealed the suspects pulled back a portion of the fence and entered the chicken shed. Once inside, the suspects used a golf club, and possibly another similar type instrument, to slaughter the birds.

In a quote given to L.A. Times, Deputy Chris Curtice said, “People should be alarmed at something like that.” You can say that again, Chris!

Thus far, the monstrous rampage remains an unsolved mystery. Foster Farms is offering a $5,000 reward (the approximate damages from the crime) for information leading to an arrest, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund has ponied up an additional $5,000.
