The Cooking Channel recently put together a list of Favorite State Foods as supplied by fans, and compiled a full list called “Across the Country in 50 State Dishes” that includes recipes for each of these iconic dishes.

Then Mental Floss blew the whole thing up into giant map form, which brings all that edible awesomeness home. You can view the much-more-legible, enlarged version here.

The one thing that always occurs to us about maps like these is: NYC is not all of New York; same goes for Chicago not being Illinois, and L.A. and San Francisco not being California, and on down the list.

A map like this always leaves out subtle regional variations that occur within a state—which is unfortunate, because those variations are usually both interesting and delicious.

There’s still plenty of amusement to be had here, though. The fact that there’s a link to a Las Vegas All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Recipe is completely hilarious.

Now, back to the inherent controversy that arises when you put together a map like this. It’s obvious that Buffalo Wings don’t represent the vast breadth of NY food. But how the hell do you decide on just one recipe for Texas Brisket? Or a North Carolina Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwich? This is total food fight territory.
