Midori Green Sriracha, sold by NY-based Musahi foods, calls its sauce a “unique Japanese interpretation of the classic sauce.”

Sriracha is just a name of a sauce similar to ketchup or mayo, explains Musahi president Gideon Sarraf. Musahi makes its green version of Sriracha with Serrano chiles from Peru and Mexico. “It’s more fresh tasting and has a bit more of a kick,” says Sarraf.

The Musahi founder explains the unique sauce’s inception,

“I first heard about green Sriracha when I was in Asia about six years ago. I had heard about this, it seemed like a mythical thing, but I had seen an actual picture of it. I was kind of obsessed with it, so I would go to all these markets and say, ‘Do you carry green sriracha?’ Most people would look at me like we don’t know what you’re talking about. There was a guy in Osaka that was like, ‘No, no we don’t have that but we kind of make something similar on our own.’ So he kind of explained to me what he did, I tweaked it a little, and that’s how the recipe started.”

The green Sriracha went on sale April 1st, and a bottle is available for $4.99 on the company website.

ABC News reports that green Sriracha is also available in a few retail stores in New York right now, but that Sarraf is “in talks with ‘a ton’ of distributors and retailers.” He says the goal is to get his product mainstreamed into supermarkets as soon as possible, and said he had no interest in limiting it to gourmet or specialty shops.
