The NYT recently profiled Dr. Mark Hyman, the physician who helped Bill Clinton get healthy again after his 2004 quadruple bypass surgery.
The Times reports that the 67-year-old former president—who used to jog to McDonald’s and regularly enjoy greasy steaks and tamales at Doe’s Eat Place in Little Rock, AK—is around 30 pounds thinner than when he was president.
So how the hell did he do it? Dr. Hyman’s first diet initiative was to immediately take Bill Clinton off his previously prescribed vegan diet, and got the former president eating fish and lean protein. Dr. Hyman tells the Times,
So, what exactly does The Clinton Cleanse entail? According to Dr. Hyman,
[pullquote]”[It is] a diet that treats Oreos and Coke like addictive drugs, and that emphasizes the benefits of mostly gluten-free whole foods, proteins and natural fats.”[/pullquote]
Hyman advocates a wellness philosophy called ‘functional medicine,’ or “the practice of addressing the root causes of chronic diseases (from diabetes and arthritis to insomnia and fatigue) through dietary and lifestyle changes, rather than diagnosing them and prescribing traditional medicine to treat the symptoms.”
The doctor says weight loss is a nice side effect of functional medicine.
The doctor advises his busy patients, including Hillary Clinton, to carry packets of macadamia nut, walnut, or coconut butter in their jacket pockets, and eat travel snacks like grass-fed beef and turkey jerky and cans of wild salmon. Hyman says,
But some of Mr. Clinton’s Arkansas friends says he looks too thin and almost frail, reports the Times.
Dr. Hyman must be doing something right, though, considering his clients include the queen and king of Jordan and other world leaders and moneyed urbanites.
The svelte Bill Clinton and his doctor will be featured in the soon-to-be-released documentary Fed Up about the food industry and the growing obesity epidemic.
