The Norwegian army is the first militia group to collectively adopt vegetarianism—even if it is only part-time.
The army plans to commence “Meatless Mondays” in an effort to limit its consumption of environmentally unfriendly products like meat.The plan is already in place at one of Norway’s main bases. The army estimates that eating meals without meat just one day per week will cut their animal consumption by 150 metric tons. That’s about 331,000 pounds of meat.
The USDA reports that the livestock industry produces 14.5 percent of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. So maybe taking one day a week to eat vegetarian isn’t such a bad idea. There’s also personal health to think about. Metro reports that “non-meat eaters are 32 percent less likely to die from cardiovascular issues and generally have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity.”
