Popular travel website TripAdvisor released its list of the top 10 U.S. cities for pizza based on reviews and opinions by travelers. Needless to say, the list is very, very suspicious. According to the ranking, New York City is the fourth best pizza city in the world. Excuse me? This just threw us for a loop. The three cities that beat out NYC were San Diego, Las Vegas, and Boston. It’s like some confused human hacked the list and made up this very strange ranking. Or maybe it was just the site’s director of communications?

“TripAdvisor travelers reveal that some of America’s best pizza is being tossed on the West Coast, which flies in the face of the common perception that pizza is only a Northeast or Midwest specialty,” said Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor. “Better known for burritos and beaches than marinara and mozzarella, travelers now have yet another reason to visit sunny San Diego.”

Don’t get us wrong, amazing pizza can be found all over the United States. But there are certain cities you go to for certain foods, and NYC is where you go for pizza. Similarly, L.A. is where you head for tacos, Texas is where you go for Tex Mex, New Orleans is where you can find the best Cajun, and so on. These are just simple food facts. According to the release, one TripAdvisor traveler in San Diego said, “The pizza was just as good as being home in New York.” This reviewer may be biased, but since it is a fairly common practice to use NYC pizza as the benchmark for all other pizza, wouldn’t it rank No. 1? Take a bite of an immaculate slice from Di Fara in Midwood, a perfectly charred pie from Totonno’s in Coney Island, or a puffy Neapolitan pizza from Paulie Gee’s in Greenpoint, and you might question the validity of NYC coming in at No. 4 as well.
