The New York restaurant community is building on its already stellar disaster relief track record—the NYC Food Truck Association was recently nominated for a Helping Hands Award recognizing its post-Sandy efforts—by pitching in to help with the aftermath of the tornado that decimated parts of Oklahoma City earlier this week. Mission Chinese Food’s Danny Bowien, who’s from OKC, will be flying in this weekend to collaborate on a pop-up restaurant benefiting the Red Cross called OK Chefs. He’ll collaborate with local talent Jonathon Stranger on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Myriad Gardens restaurant, where he will cook for a $35 minimum suggested donation.
Baker Allison Robicelli of Robicelli’s Cupcakes, meanwhile, is aiming to pool together the resources of local restaurants and chefs via a campaign called “NYC Food Community for Oklahoma” on the disaster relief crowdfunding site Team Rubicon. Thus far, the account has raised $8,000 of its $15,000 goal, thanks to contributions from New York area food players including Alex and Kevin Pemoulie of Jersey City’s Thirty Acres and the owners of Williamsburg’s Whisk NYC.
