You can fight S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) with food—and not just by eating your feelings, says Philly.com. The condition is considered a form of depression that strikes during the winter months when the temperature dips and daylight hours are slim.
To combat the symptoms, an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokeswoman suggests a “diet rich in whole grains, low-fat dairy, seafood, and even dark chocolate.” Here are seven foods to add to your rotation:
- Herring: Rich in vitamin D, herring can improve your mood.
- Salmon: The omega-3s found in salmon can aid in warding off depressive bouts.
- Oysters: Magnesium in oysters can help relieve your stress.
- Spinach: Spinach’s folic acid can increase serotonin.
- Dark chocolate: Eating dark chocolate can release endorphins.
- Greek yogurt: The calcium in yogurt can relieve mood swings.
- Popcorn: Selenium in popcorn can uplift your spirits.
