Papa John’s is the latest fast-food chain to see its restaurant become a political arena, in large part due to CEOs and other public faces voicing their beefs within earshot of the media. The conservative group Rebooting America declared tomorrow “National Papa John’s Appreciation Day,” which mostly entails ordering pies and hashtagging Instragram photos.
The new group took a few pages from the Chick-Fil-A playbook by directing its members to order from the pizza chain today in a collective show of support of its CEO John Schnatter. Blaming the Affordable Care Act, Schnatter announced his intention to balance the costs of mandatory healthcare by scaling back employee hours and charging an extra 11¢-14¢ per pie, a policy that has ignited plenty of debate.
In actuality, the cost would work out to more like 3.4 to 4.6 cents per pizza, as calculated by Forbes staff writer Caleb Melby.
