Los Gatos Japanese restaurant Katsu seems to be making a bid for a world record with a $1,200 menu item called the Decadence Staircase, reports ABC News. It’s perhaps not surprising that this extravagance comes from the depths of Silicon Valley proper, where tech multimillionaires are made.
Chef and co-owner Katsuhiko Hanamure came up with dish, which is decorated with a rainbow of caviar: Russian Sveruga, Osetra, Golden Osetra, and Beluga. There is also Pacific spiny lobster sashimi, Japanese Wagyu shabu shabu, and edible 24-karat gold leaves. Hanamure has trained with chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa (of Nobu fame), in addition to serving various stints cooking at high-end restaurants around the world.
Believe it or not, the Decadence Staircase isn’t even close to taking the title of the most expensive dish in the U.S. That distinction most likely goes to FleurBurger 5000 at Fleur in Las Vegas. Priced at $5,000, the burger is made of a Wagyu “beef patty and a cube of seared foie gras,” topped with black truffles and a sauce with truffles. A bottle of 1995 Château Petrus accompanies the burger.
