Whoops: Looks like we failed to come through on that 2013 resolution to stop spending most of our time in bars and shoveling our paychecks into booze. Sorry for partying!

Thankfully, there’s a silver lining to this year of overindulgence—namely, that we’ve been to a lot of new places in the past 12 months, and now we’re ready to tell you which ones were worth the salt on their margarita glasses.

This year saw the opening of two bars that made waves well beyond New York City—the Dead Rabbit for cocktails, and the game-changing beer bar Tørst—but there was plenty more to get excited about as well. All in all, 2013 was less about booze trends and more about the evolution of the way we drink in New York: more great bars in underserved neighborhoods, more bars with serious cocktail cred, and more exciting beer taps nudging out the old standards.

So in 2014, instead of resolving to stop drinking, why not just resolve to just drink better? Keep these bars in your rotation and you’ll be well on your way.
