Do you hold a warm place in your heart for Johnnie Walker Black? Do you love it so much that you wish you could surround yourself with the smell of it all the time? If so, Heriot-Watt University has just developed your dream fabric.
This “smart tweed” features microencapsulation technology that allows it to smell like the unique scent of JWB—a scent the makers call Aqua Alba. The colors used in the tweed reflect the ingredients used in the whiskey-making process. What’s really impressive is that this technology allows the scent to stay permanently imbued in the fabric, even after multiple cleanings.
This technology was first used in therapeutic headwear for cancer patients two years ago, but Heriot-Watt recognized that it had even greater potential. In partnership with Harris Tweed Hebrides, these two Scottish powerhouses made a fabric that evokes the rich malt, golden vanilla, red fruit, and dark chocolate tones that are Johnnie Walker Black’s signature.
Donald Mackay, who is in charge of finishing at Harris Tweed’s Shawbost mill, told The Drinks Business that this was the first smart fabric he’d worked with that successfully withstood multiple dry cleanings.
A full range of products using this fabric is planned for unveiling in Berlin before being launched across Europe.
Some smells are immediately evocative of comfort, and that warm, amber hug in a glass is definitely one of them for a lot of people.
