Get out your mood rings and frost your tips, ’90s kids: Coca-Cola has brought back Surge soda after a 12-year hiatus.
Earlier today, the former Mountain Dew competitor went on sale exclusively through Amazon, marking the end of an interminable wait for fans of the hardcore soda. The impetus for the landmark arrangement? A nostalgia-inspired Facebook group called “SURGE Movement” dedicated to bringing back the citrusy classic.
Brought together by their love of the short-lived drink (1997-2002), group members discuss nineties nostalgia, what Surge means to them, and how badly they long for its return. With more than 128,000 likes, the three-year-old group caught the attention of the Coca-Cola company.
While the first batch of Surge to be released has already sold out, this may be better news than it seems. “Future plans for the brand will depend on the level of excitement exhibited by fans across the country,” says Wendy Clark, president of sparkling and strategic marketing for Coca-Cola North America.
It looks like the people have spoken.
