Here’s a map showing the excise taxes per gallon applied to beer in each state. These are taxes that hit brewers who are making beer, so this doesn’t mean each beer is marked up an extra $1.07 for taxes in Alaska. But if a brewery has to pay that much per gallon of beer it produces, eventually the consumer is going to feel it. This is exactly why the NYC brewing community was fiercely opposed to the abolition of a long-standing excise tax exemption last year.
For beer economists, there’s plenty to mull over here.
