For a limited time, a compact Kentucky Fried Chicken meal will be offered to passengers aboard Japan Airlines flights from Tokyo to Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Paris, and Frankfurt, reports the Los Angeles Times.

From December 1 to February 28, premium-economy and economy-class passengers will receive an on-board meal featuring a fried drumstick and chicken breast, along with cole slaw, flat bread, and a mayo-based sauce.

According to MSN, KFC is a popular meal for young Japanese couples during Chrismas-time. The tradition dates back to the ’70s, “when expats in Japan began buying [KFC] chicken as the next best thing to turkey, which was not readily available.” The meal was adopted by young Japanese folks and “the fried meat rapidly became a festive fixture.”

Amidst reports of the health-food makeover of airport and airline fare, JAL is clearly taking things in a different direction. For nutritionists, it may be two steps forward and one step back. But we’re guessing those who fly on participating flights won’t be too upset.
