As far as marketing stunts go, this one is pretty genius: Dutch coffee company Douwe Egberts set up a vending machine in the middle of Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, advertised free coffee, and let tired travelers have at it. The catch? There’s no buttons on the machine, or any other conventional means of communicating your desire for coffee.
Here’s the genius part: The vending machine is equipped with facial recognition software that detects customers’ yawns, then helpfully dispenses some coffee to get passengers through their jet lag and six-hour layovers. Douwe Egberts dispensed about 200 cups of coffee, then filmed it and made this adorable video. Because what’s the point of a marketing stunt if you can’t publicize it?
