That Time Knicks Guard J.R. Smith Ordered $3,000 of Room Service in China

Apparently, he just wanted to see if they would keep bringing it.

J.R. Smith is a constant source of amusement—unless, of course, you’re actually a Knicks fan who would rather see him focusing on winning than clubbing with Rihanna or untying players’ shoes during games.

Smith got a brutal dressing down for his antics on Yahoo Sports today by writer Adrian Wojnarowski, who says “NBA’s clown prince” is on a “collision course with cliche.” Amid the catalog of damning anecdotes he brings up is this gem:

Perhaps his greatest excess of idiocy had been a weekend of running a room service bill into the proximity of $3,000, a source with direct knowledge told Yahoo Sports. He kept ordering food, stacking piles of trays upon trays – “just to see if they would keep bringing it to the room,” the source said. All uneaten, all on the franchise’s tab

Who is this anonymous source dry-snitching on Smith’s overseas room-service habits? Hard to say. But the story does kind of remind us of the time Kanye West got £2,000 of Indian takeout delivered to New York from Wales via helicopter and plane. But at least Yeezy paid for it himself and, apparently, ate the food with his entourage. Smith’s biggest misstep here was making other people bankroll his tomfoolery and wasting food.
