Last fall, New York Post reporter Stephanie Smith’s boyfriend told her she was 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring after she made him a turkey sandwich. And obviously Smith, like any rational, self-respecting dame, decided to take his jokey compliment literally and hold him to his word. She got busy in the kitchen, blogging about her progress on 300 Sandwiches and laying out her strategy in the New York Post.
“Things were moving at a natural pace, but I wondered what it would take for him to propose,” she wrote of their relationship in September. ”Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material.”
Good news, guys: It worked! Her man finally put a ring on it yesterday while they were vacationing in Barbados. “I can say with certainty that the way to a man’s heart really is through his stomach,” crowed Smith in an NY Post announcement.
And get this—it only took 256 sammies for her man to cave. So not only did she achieve her stated goal, she in fact exceeded her own expectations of what it would take to get there. Now that’s how you lean in like you mean it.
No word yet on whether she’ll continue making sandwiches, but she did post today about how the proposal caught her unaware, which explains the mortifying state of her unmanicured nails in all the engagement photos. On her blog, Smith writes,
“Let this be a lesson to you, ladies: if you are in a long-term relationship, and in a romantic place or about to go to a romantic place, and your girlfriend suggests you get a manicure, get the manicure. You never know what freshly painted nails could inspire.”
