Yelp Adds Inspection Grades to Restaurant Reviews

Yelp will soon include restaurant inspection scores for establishments located in San Francisco, NYC, Chicago, and Philly. At very least, this new feature make it a bit easier to determine the legitimacy of a review claiming there was a syringe in the chicken noodle soup.

The added element reflects the “Local Inspector Value-entry Specification,” or LIVES, which allows local agencies to share hygiene inspection data online. Yelp users already have access to the inspection history of local restaurants and purveyors in San Francisco. Letter grades for New York City establishments will be available on the website in coming weeks.

Citing a study published by the National Environmental Health Association, Jeremy Stoppelman explains on a Yelp post that when “restaurant scores are posted conspicuously, best practices improve across the industry.”
