UniDog, a nonprofit organization based in Thailand, is trying to put an end to the eating and commercial trading of dog meat. Every year, an estimated 25 million dogs are killed for food, states UniDog’s Facebook page. And according to CNNas many as 200,000 live dogs each year are smuggled from northeast Thailand across the Mekong River destined for restaurants in Vietnam and China. It’s safe to say the (illegal) dog meat trade in Thailand is thriving.

The UniDog campaign aims to raise awareness about the illegal trading of dog meat, and it encourages people to sponsor a Thai street dog or cat and donate money to help those animals live a better life. “Our mission is to bring about the day when all stray dogs and cats can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction. Unidog will be the page that anyone can share the story about stray animals around Thailand that are waiting for your help,” states UniDog in their mission statement.

UniDog is not the only organization trying to put an end to the trade and consumption of dog meat. Soi Dog Foundation (based in Thailand, the United States, Australia, the UK, France, and Holland) has taken in hundreds of dogs seized by Thai border police and is asking for sponsors and families to adopt.
