What a weird day it’s shaping up to be in the butter-drenched world of Paula Deen. First, she tweeted a photo of herself looking lonely and forlorn, with the promise of a video statement to come. Then the statement went up. Then it was pulled. Then it went up again, only to be blocked again. Then she dropped a different apology, targeted more at Matt Lauer and the Today Show team, whom she stood up this morning.
But all the apologizing is PR nonsense—what people really want to know is what Deen’s employers and advertisers will do in the wake of this scandal. Well, Food Network shoots first: TMZ is reporting that the network will not renew her contract. Julia Moskin of the New York Times has confirmed:
Email from spokesman: “Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month.”
