The Best Food Moments in 2014’s Best Picture-Nominated Films

We look at the crucial role food and drink play in tonight's Oscar-nominated movies, from American Hustle to Philomena.

The representation of food and drink in film has a storied history. From the hard-boiled egg extravaganza in Cool Hand Luke to the spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp, food is often used to convey information about a moment in time, a place, or a subtle aspect of a character we’re trying to understand.

This year’s field of contenders in the 86th Academy Award’s Best Picture category keeps the tradition alive. The stories told by these films are as diverse as ever, covering a gamut from the antebellum South to a not-so-far-away future in which high-waisted pants are fashionable for men. But in each one, food plays a role in a crucial scene. And so, we thought it only right to give out our own awards for the best food or drink moments featured in this year’s Best Picture-nominated films.
