Saying you got your start on Craigslist can raise eyebrows, but Melissa Hom did it the right way, using the sometimes-sketchy classified ads site to market her photography services. The hustle paid off: By shooting gratis for Craigslist clientele, the NYU journalism grad sharpened her self-taught skills and bulked up her portfolio, leading her down a delicious path to food photography.

Featured in publications like GQ, National Geographic, and the New York Magazine, Hom has the same sensibility that defines some of the great chefs she works with: She knows when to let ingredients and technique speak for themselves, and when to set off the visual fireworks. Pliable rounds of soba dough from the Matsushita brothers and Pain D’Avignon baguettes are given due reverence by Hom, a self-professed dough addict, while other subjects are turned on their head. In one shot, she takes you inside a glass vessel to better understand the cheffy trend of infusing ingredients, and in another Kelly Choi goes S&M on our favorite French toques.

You think you’ve seen it all on Craigslist? Just wait until you take a look at Hom’s ten favorite photos, broken down here in her own words.
