10 Ways to Eat Like a Character on Parks and Recreation

Here are the recipes you need to know how to make—like homemade cereal and meat-only dishes—if you’re going to hold your own at a meal with the Leslie Knopes, Ron Swanson, and the rest of the Pawnee crew.

  • Orange Ginger Mint Sodas. Donna always keeps it classy. When someones asks why you’re drinking something so fussy, just follow her lead: “Do I look like I drink water?”
  • Sugar Steak with Bourbon. Steak marinated in bourbon is the meal-and-a-drink combo of Ron Swanson’s dreams. Taste it and you’ll be dreaming about it, too.
  • Daniel Patterson’s Poached Scrambled Eggs. An egg breakfast—a clear requirement of the Swanson household—is especially easy when making scrambled eggs is as simple as boil water, swirl in eggs, and scoop out a perfect “scramble.”
  • Homemade Cinnamon Toast Crunch. This little bit of breakfast Americana would fit right into a complete and patriotic Pawnee breakfast. Plus, Donna loves breakfast cereal, so the only logical thing to do is make your own.
  • Bacon Wrapped Brown Sugar Pork Loin. Ron’s “#1 favorite food” wrapped around a big pork loin that’s glazed with brown sugar. What more could you ask for?
  • Lazy Mary’s Lemon Tart. Leslie hates laziness, but we think she’d appreciate this aptly named tart, which requires one simple step—toss all the filling ingredients (whole meyer lemons with peel, pith and all) into the blender—before you pour the mix into a tart crust and bake. This is one dessert—or “zert” as Tom would say—where laziness rewards you in spades.
  • Hunter’s Style Chicken. Also known as chicken cacciatore (or "chicky-catch," as Tom calls it), this dish will keep you warm during those frigid Pawnee winters.
  • Tuxedo Chili. “You know what’s sexy? Turkey chili. Yum.” Straight from the mouth of Leslie Knope—turkey chili is the new aphrodisiac.
  • Aretha Franklin’s Waffles of Insane Greatness. The cornstarch in this waffle batter helps tamp down gluten formation, making these waffles silky and moist inside with a crust as thin and crisp as an eggshell. Leslie would approve.
  • Butternut Sage Scones. These scones are so incredibly moist, and perfumed with sage and squash, that Leslie might suggest again for Ann to smuggle them away in her bra. We just hope they opt out of the cinnamon drizzle or that’s going to be a mess.

From Leslie Knope’s favorite pocketed breakfast food to Ron Swanson’s meat-only meals, here are the top 10 things you need to know how to make if you’re going to hold your own at a meal with the Parks and Recreation crew in Pawnee.
