An Israeli rabbi of the Hasidic yeshiva of Gur, an ultra-orthodox sect, believes consuming soy will turn boys gay and has therefore banned his male students from consuming soy-based foods. His rationale? Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter fears the estrogen-like chemicals that are found in soy products—which have been linked to hormone changes—will make the boys more feminine, and in turn older students and teachers will be more attracted to them, reports the Haredi World.

We’ll bet this rabbi has never experienced the incredible spice and creaminess of a good mapo tofu or the fluffiness of a tofu scramble. Plus, he’s probably just gay or homophobic. Most likely, he’s both.
