In the Ozark town of Waynesville, MO, the Route 66 Candy Shoppe is handing out free fudge to anyone who weighs more than 300 pounds. Why? Because it’s Fat Tuesday, y’all, and Route 66 owner Charley Dill wants you to “Walk, run, waddle, or ride your motorized wheelchair down to the Route 66 Candy Shoppe,” according to the store’s Facebook page.
But some Waynesville residents are outraged. Former customer Deb Czuprynski tells local news source KSPR,
“It may be a joke to them but to other viewers they can’t help it, some will die because of obesity, no one should ever make fun of it.”
Dill reacted by telling the news source,
“We are not trying to make a statement or do anything to offend anyone. We just thought it was a good way to invite people to come in and have a good laugh.”
Dill—who’s been compared to the late Dom Deluise—tells CNN that “fellow fatties” from Columbia, MO (which is about 100 miles from Waynesville) have told him they’re loading up the car and plan to drive to his shop for the free fudge. Dill even suggested future specials, like free candy for pregnant women on Labor Day.
On one hand, this offer is kind of inappropriate; on the other, we can always get behind free candy.
