How the Mighty Have Fallen: Speed-Eating Legend Takeru Kobayashi Performs for a Bunch of Goons

Watching this video really made us sad. Kobayashi is one of the guys responsible for making competitive-eating popular in this country with his insane hot-dog eating technique and electrifying onstage antics. But he’s a misunderstood dude, as we learned a couple years ago when he opened up to Time Out New York about being banned from the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, then thrown in jail when he showed up.

Since refusing to sign on with Major League Eating, the company that has something of a monopoly on big-money eating events, he’s gone rogue, popping up wherever there’s money to be made from world-record attempts. Some of those appearances aren’t so bad, like eating 14 Twinkies in a minute on the Wendy Willams Show. But this video reveals another story. Watching him perform for a bunch of lager-guzzling meatheads who probably wish their buddy had ordered a stripper instead…well, it’s kind of got a Kenny Powers feel to it, don’t you think?

We wish Kobayashi the best of luck in gaining back the stage he deserves for his talents.
