Everything We Know About the New Twinkie So Far

The iconic snacks makes its triumphant return this week, with a few tweaks.

  • It'll be back July 15th. By far and away the most important information about the New Twinkie: customers will be able to satisfy their craving for nutritionally void cake snacks in just six days. (Photo: PR News)
  • The Twinkie could soon be healthy(ish). Hostess's new owners—Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management—plan to invest in some R&D, hoping to lure in customers put off by Twinkies' junk food rep with healthier varieties, including stevia-sweetened and gluten-free. Somehow we doubt Michael Pollan would approve of whatever they plan to put in Twinkies instead of plain ol' flour. (Photo: Hostess)
  • They'll be available in more places. Twinkies may have seemed ubiquitous before, but they were only available in a third of U.S. convenience stores. The new owners are gunning to get that up to two-thirds, and they'll also start placing Twinkies in key junk food dispensaries like vending machines. (Photo: Flickr)
  • But you won't find them at Hostess outlet stores. Hostess will no longer be operating its 600 thrift stores, where customers could buy soon-to-expire baked goods, including Twinkies, on the cheap. But we thought Twinkies never went stale?! (Photo: LA Wave)
  • They'll be more freakishly long-lasting than ever. Before Hostess went out of business, it tweaked the Twinkie recipe to extend its shelf life from 26 to 45 days, maintaining "freshness" for a whopping month and a half. Not disturbing at all. (Photo: Hostess)
  • New owner, same price. At $3.99 for a package of ten, Twinkies are as light on the wallet as ever. And thanks to the longer shelf life, they're a great investment. (Photo: Flickr)

Junk-food aficionados were devastated last fall at the news that Hostess—maker of Twinkies, Ho-Hos, Wonder Bread, and other all-American #fatkid snacks—had declared bankruptcy. But like a highly processed phoenix rising from the ashes, the Twinkie will soon return to 7-Elevens across the country under new ownership, with other iconic items soon to follow. Of course, customers have a host of burning questions about the Twinkie 2.0: Where can we find it? Will it taste the same? Is it still the one snack guaranteed to survive the apocalypse?!?!

We’ve collected all the relevant information about the New Twinkie, which hits shelves within the week. Click through the slide show above for all the essential intel you need to be fully prepared for the return of cream-filled fingers of spongy yellow cake.
