Food can be a serious art form—just look at the gorgeous creations coming out of avant-garde kitchens like Alinea. But beyond the plate, it can also become a medium that artists use to realize their vision.

The portraits represented above have been crafted out of edibles ranging from leeks to cupcakes to toast. From Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s 16th-century painting of the Greek garden god, which he imagines as a composite of different vegetables, to the more modern creations of artists such as Enrique Ramos—who constructs rapper Eminem entirely out of M&Ms—it’s clear that food is not only useful for eating. (Though we hope someone ate most of these projects after they were admired.)
