Sure, it's not as cool as live crab vending machines, but we'd still like one on our desk.

Hang up your hair net, lunch counter lady. Students at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou can now get steamed rice listlessly dumped onto their trays by an automated vending machine.

The college canteen rolled out two rice dispensers last week, reports Chinese Radio International, when it posted these images of hungry kids lining up to try out the appliances.

This machine can spit out a serving of cooked rice every 2.5 seconds.

Honestly, we’re not sure why the students look so pleased with their steamed rice. Are they unaware that Japan has magical machines that vend anime canned bread, lettuce, and alcohol? Or that here in the States, deep-dish pizza, burritos, fries, and even marijuana is merely a button-push away? Or that other, better vending machines in China contain live crabs?

If they’re smart, they’ll transfer to the National University of Singapore, which has a vending machine that makes spaghetti bolognese, curry chicken, hor fun noodles and Yangzhou fried rice.
