Cheerios’ first-ever entry into Superbowl advertising shows an interracial couple explaining the mom’s pregnancy to their young daughter. It’s to the point, and spot-on it terms of Cheerios family-friendly image.
So why the to-do? In 2013, Cheerios released its first ad featuring the same interracial family. “Just Checking,” the name of the ad from last May, showed a white mother explaining to her daughter that the cereal is good for the heart. In response, the daughter pours cereal all over her napping father, who is black.
The ad got the message across, but Cheerios experienced a backlash on its YouTube channel. The comments got so out of control that the company shut down the comments section.
“Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families, and we celebrate them all.”
Regardless of controversy, the ad garnered 5 million YouTube views and quite a bit of press. So Cheerios has brought the family back for the 2014 Superbowl, where the newest ad is bound to attract as much attention as possible.
Ad Week notes that many would have expected the family to discuss the daughter being interracial or “different” in this second ad. Instead, Cheerios shows a simple moment between family members.
We’re anxious to see if there’s backlash this time around.
