When it comes to birthdays, Vicky Knoop doesn’t settle with balloons and just any cake. Instead, she goes all out.

To surprise her boyfriend on his birthday, the San Francisco-based artist created a rather unconventional cake based on a gruesome scene from the 1984 sci-fi horror film The Thing.

The cake features a split-face created by sculpting and painting flesh-colored fondant over rice crispy treats. It took the artist ten hours to complete the structure of the faces, and another six to sculpt and paint the sides.
